Successful Multivariate Analysis Training Course

As part of the MicroB3 workshop series, a training course in multivariate analysis of marine microbial biodiversity was held at Jacobs University, Bremen, from the 16th to the 21st of June, 2013. 22 participants from 14 countries attended.

Ecological data are complex, multidimensional, and difficult to analyse using the standard univariate and bivariate techniques familiar to many life scientists. Thus, to better contend with their data sets, this course granted participants a high-level theoretical and practical introduction to multivariate analyses. Over its five day duration, the course transitioned from basic data handling to analysis of full ecological data sets using a range of techniques geared towards community composition and biodiversity data. Further, the course included perspectives on sampling and experimental design to support quality analysis as well as presentation and discussion of several case studies. Participants had the opportunity to apply their new skills to their own data and discuss their observations both during the formal sessions and in unstructured evening sessions.

The course's social and networking event comprised dinner with Rhenish flair at the politically pertinent restaurant, “Ständige Vertretung”, followed by a historical walking tour of the Hanseatic City of Bremen.
